The Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) will on
Friday, 13th October 2017, present an alternative address to the 2018 National Budget that was delivered by Finance Minister Felix Mutati.
PeP leader Sean Enock Tembo (SET) said the decision to present an alternative 2018 National Budget has been motivated by two principal factors.
“… The first factor is the inadequacy and deficiency of the 2018 National Budget that the Honourable Minister presented to the Nation.
The second factor is premised on the four core values on which the Patriots for Economic Progress is founded; being Patriotism, Accountability, Competence and Courage. The decision to prepare and present to the nation, an alternative 2018 National Budget, is in furtherance of two of our core values which are Accountability and Competence, while our commitment to provide alternative policy direction to this nation, demonstrates our high levels of Patriotism,” Tembo said.
He said the Alternative 2018 National Budget Address will be under the theme; “Widening the Tax Base and Reducing the Tax Burden on the Working Poor, to Ensure Effective Domestic Resource Mobilization so as to Eliminate Reliance on Donor Funding”.
According to Tembo , the theme for the alternative budget address is appropriate because it is immoral for any government to tax its workers at 37.5% on PAYE, while the mines and other FDI investors do not pay their fair share of tax.
” PeP has so far received a number of submissions from various individual citizens, civil society organizations, community based organizations, faith based organizations, the private sector as well as other key stakeholders, towards the development of the Alternative 2018 National Budget. We would like to encourage all those who are desirous of making further submissions to do so immediately.
The presentation of the Alternative 2018 National Budget will take place at Radisson Blu Hotel along Great East Road, opposite Arcades Shopping Mall, from 0900hrs to 1100hrs, on Friday 13th October 2017.
