Policy Monitoring Research Centre (PMRC) Executive Director Bennadette Deka says access to descent housing remains a huge challenges in Zambia.
Speaking during the PMRC and People’s Republic of China Infrastructure Development Symposium, at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka, Ms Deka said there is a serious housing deficit in Zambia.
Ms. Deka has since urged participants at the two-day 12-13 October 2017 workshop to address the issue of the teething three (3) million housing deficit during the symposium deliberations.
According to Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo, Zambia’s population will hit a 23 million figure by 2030 and experience a housing deficit of three million units.
Officiating at a National Housing Policy Provincial Conference in Chipata, Mr. Kasolo lamented that the deficit is fueling development of slums.
On his part, Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research (ZIPAR) Consultant Emmanuel Mutale proposed construction of 120, 000 housing units annually as a solution.
