United Party for National Development(UPND) strong man Geoferey Bwalya Mwamba says incarceration has raised Hakainde Hichilema’s political∞ fortunes as the case was with late Michael Sata who was twice thrown in jail by President Levy Mwanawasa on politically motivated charges.
And Mwamba fondly refered to as GBM has urged chief Mukuni not to be intimidated by Home Affairs Minister Steven Kampyongo.
Mwamba said in a telephone conversation that Hichilema’s political profile has marched his entrepreneurship magnetism following his incarceration that has been perceived by western media as politically motivated charges.
Mwamba said even Hichilema’s ex-political confidant Michael Sata suffered the similar fate in the hands of late Mwanawasa but what those incarcerations especially the serious one of car theft did was raising his popurlarity graph.
“Actually that is not questionable because someone in the village wants to find out that ‘who is this Hichilema who has been illegally incarcerated by Edgar (President Lungu).so the profile of HH has risen. This is what also made late Sata’s polical profile to rise. When he was detained for 45 days the scenerio raised his profile. I know the Zambian people they are very peaceful and understanding. They do not want someone who abuses his power by incarcerating innocent people.
Mwamba expressed regret that President Edgar Lungu who came on the political scene as humble as lamb is using state intustituions to suppress the voices of the opposition.
” They want to silence the opposition. Who is going to talk for the poor? They have increased Zesco tariffs, if the opposition is silence they will do anything at will and with impunity. Meali-meal prices will escalate becuse no one will be talking for the Zambian people,” he complained.
Mwamba, however, said President Lungu will not cow down the UPND into silence despite the incarceration of their leader Hichilema.
“We will continue talking for the poor and Hakainde Hichilema should know that he is innocent and he will be released and he must be released unconditionally, ” Mwamba said
Meanwhile, Mwamba says Home Affair Minister Steven Kampyongo should keep traditional leaders off his “dirty” politics.
Reacting to Kampyongo’s remarks that his police will pounce on a certain Chief for sponsoring sabotage in a sharp reference to Chief Mukuni, Mwamba said in respect, Kampyongo should not entangle himself in thicket with Chiefs.
He said Kampyongo and his boss President want to silence the voices of Chiefs who are vocal.
The former Kasama Central Law Maker said the two gentlemen have realised that not every here chief can be bought with a pieces of silver so they want to silence them by giving them false charges.
“…but I appeal to chiefs, please do not mind Kampyongo’s rantings. They just want to silence the chiefs but we are saying no to that,” he said.
Mwamba said Kampyongo and President Lungu should not think PF will be in power and there will be a time when they will account for the wrong things they are doing to the the Zambia people.
