Zambia Alternative Mining Indaba (ZAMI) Chairperson Leonard Chiti says it is unfortunate that government has misunderstood the role of the civil society organization in the country. In his key note speech at the 6th familiar, Fr Chiti said it is sad that civil society organizations are perceived as enemies of the State each time they voice out on issues affecting the country.
” Each time the civil society organisations voice out on issues affecting the people , they are viewed as pro-imperialists and driving the agendas of their Western funders which is really not the case,” he said. Fr Chiti who is also Jesuit Centre for Theoregical Reflection(JCTR) Executive Director said the role of the civil society organizations is to offer effective checks and balances to the government of the day. Fr Chiti urged participants of the mining indaba to freely deliberate and bring out issues that will bring sanity to the mining sector.
