The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) last week seized 19 bales of used under garments in Lusaka amounting to K30, 250.
In a statement to Byta FM News, ZABS Head Marketing and Public Relations Hazel Zulu reveals that the bales of used under garments were discovered in some warehouses in Lusaka through its Inspectorate Department when it conducted a market surveillance inspection.
Zulu states that ZABS seized the consignment in line with the compulsory standard ZS 559 which is a code of practice for the inspection and acceptance criteria for used textile products in Zambia.
She explains that the standard prohibits the importation and sale of used under garments in Zambia.
Zulu says the under garments and nightwear include all types of garments worn close to the skin such as pajamas, night dresses, night gowns, patients hospital wear, ladies and gents briefs, brassieres camisoles and vests.
The ZABS Head Marketing and Public Relations has called on citizens to desist from buying used under garments and to report perpetrators of such vices to the Bureau adding that the seized bales will be incinerated or destroyed.
