Church Against Distribution Of Condoms In Schools

THE Parliamentary Committee on Health, Community Development and Social Services yesterday heard that the Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) is against the distribution of condoms in schools and encourages pupils to abstain from sex before marriage.
CHAZ executive director Karen Sichinga said the 16 Catholic and protestant churches affiliated to CHAZ do not support distribution of condoms to teenagers in schools but support behavioural change programmess that encourage adolescents to abstain from sex before marriage.
Mrs Sichinga said this when she appeared before the Health, Community Development and Social Services committee chaired by Bwana Mkubwa member of Parliament Jonas Chanda of the Patriotic Front (PF).
“We [CHAZ] promote abstinence alongside behavioural change programmes,” Mrs Sichinga said in response to Mr Chanda, who asked for CHAZ’s stance concerning distribution of condoms to adolescents in schools.
And CHAZ head of health programmes Dhally Mwenda said a study from America shows that adolescents who are committed to church activities have delayed sexual debuts.
Delayed sexual debut refers to waiting a little longer before you have a first sexual experience.
Mr Chanda urged CHAZ to consider conducting a local research of delayed sexual debut.
Dr Mwenda told the committee that CHAZ has embarked on a pilot project in Isoka, Ludanzi and Chiengi districts to sensitise female adolescents on sexual reproductive health issues.
He said the project is in line with comprehensive sexuality education studies which indicate that adolescents who are exposed to sexual reproductive health education are less likely to engage in early sex or making poor reproductive health choices.
“We cannot run away from talking about sex because it is all over social media and our children need accurate data over the matter.
“Through our pilot project, we have trained community educators and teachers who help to educate the adolescent girls in sexual reproduction health,” Dr Mwenda said.
